New rich-media publishing platform for science, technology and cultural researchers, launches first Science eBook & App Platform on Kickstarter.

“ The scientific publishing industry is broken, and instead of adding value to visionary work it hides it behind steep paywalls, ridiculous publishing fees and closed bundled journals. We aim to help change that. ~ Jean-Louis Rivard

FlatandJuicy's "City of Elephants" eBook & App, on Kickstarter, introduces the company's launch title together with their new platform and mission to support scientists and researchers. The FlatandJuicy creative eBooks/Apps platform enables:

  • Access to research expeditions around the world in an eBook/App format, to help make the work more accessible to a wider audience
  • A fundraising source for the Missions through a revenue share on the sale of published titles
  • A partner for scientists, researchers and scholars to produce creative-media, communications and add outreach value to their work
  • And challenges the status-quo of the closed-access nature of the scientific and scholarly publishing industry.

FlatandJuicy embraces the principles of STEAM education, adding art and culture into the more limiting trend of STEM education. Its first title "City of Elephants," focuses on a 30-year archaeological mission in Egypt, ancient cities, ships and military technology, Greek war-elephants, and the patronage of science by ancient Greek kings. "City of Elephants" is based on "The Berenike Project" a University of Delaware / PCMA archaeological excavation and research expedition that has been featured in National Geographic and on Discovery Channel. The mission is working at the Graeco-Roman port of Berenike on the Red Sea coast, which was instrumental for importing African war-elephants in the 3rd century BC. It is co-authored by Rivard and Dr. Steven Sidebotham, founding Director of the research mission.

FlatandJuicy was founded by Jean-Louis Rivard, who has a background in technology product development, architecture and an avid interest in archaeology. Rivard recognized that "The scientific publishing industry is broken, and instead of adding value to visionary work it hides it behind steep paywalls, ridiculous publishing fees and closed bundled journals. We aim to help change that. Our goal is to provide a visual and creative voice to amazing research and development teams around the world, something that helps build an audience for their work, and inspires minds young and old to explore, dig deeper, and hopefully pursue science and research themselves,"

With a series of interesting recent developments and startups focused on long-form journalism and micropublishing, FlatandJuicy makes an interesting addition that also touches on issues of online education and digital humanities. That’s why Rivard has turned to Kickstarter to help bring great science media that's juicy: deep, meaningful, but still awesome fun - and actually help real scientists and scholars."
